The heart of the soul and original sin
The consequences of original sin on the heart of the soul, the nous, which prior to such sin had been in a state of constant illumination with the Divine Light, are as follows:
- The heart of the soul stopped functioning normally, it became darkened;
- It became identified with reason and, to a certain extent, the deification of reason;
- It became subjected to the passions, to anxiety and the conditions in its surroundings.
Another result of the Fall of Adam is “the arousal of fantasy and the demonic thoughts which dominate our memory . . . When a person is purified, he is delivered from the images of fantasy . . . [when the heart of the soul] the nous is freed and illumined, all the activities of the imagination cease.”
