The soul of man is composed of five elements: the nous, the imagination, opinion, the mind, and sense perception. The nous is the heart of the soul, its center, whereas sense perception is the non-rational power of the soul. Meanwhile, the mind is the rational power of the soul. In between the nous and sense perception lie the imagination, opinion, and the mind. These three elements of the soul need to be purified, because otherwise they darken and obstruct the nous from being illuminated and reaching deification through theoria – the vision of God (Met. Hierotheos, 2010, The illness and cure of the soul).
