Thoughts – logismoi – “make us rot. They pollute and poison the soul. They disturb all the powers of the soul: its appetitive, rational and incensive faculties . . . Many physical illnesses are caused by the unrestrained presence of thoughts . . . Someone who is dominated by thoughts loses his boldness before God and communion with Him” (Met. Hierotheos, The illness and cure of the soul, pp. 166-167).
“A sinful thought is a combination of passion and concept, we try to separate the passion from the concept by self-control and spiritual love, so that the concept remains a simple thought, which is not a sin” (p. 167).
